Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of experiential acceptance on internet overuse and to shed light on its mechanism of action. Based on previous studies and literature reviews, we proposed both full and partial mediational models in which negative emotion-relieving motive would mediate the relation between experiential acceptance and internet overuse. Three hundred sixty seven undergraduate students completed self-report inventories to measure the levels of experiential acceptance, escape from the self, sensation-seeking trait, internet use motive, and internet overuse. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that even after the effects of escape from the self and the sensation-seeking trait were controlled, the effect of experiential acceptance on internet overuse was significant. In order to evaluate and compare the two mediational models, structural equation modeling(SEM) approach was performed. SEM revealed that both full and partial mediational models fit the data well, and the former was superior to the latter. Moreover, The direct effect of experiential acceptance on internet overusene was not significant in the partial mediational model. Thus, the full mediational model was supported. In conclusion, the findings suggest that experiential acceptance may be a protective factor contributing uniquely to the prediction of internet overuse, and that negative emotion-relieving motive play a mediating role in the process. Lastly, the theoretical and practical implications of this study, as well as its limitations were discussed.
